A story from my practice…
This is about a client who decided to end therapy for all the right reasons. When we began, she was a confused 27 year old who wanted to know if she had ADD (attention deficit disorder) because she could not concentrate or get organized; she suffered from the internal struggle of perfectionism. In our work together, she began to slow down and listen to her inner voice and inner conflicts regarding different situations in her life. Sometimes these situations centered on relationships and sometimes on work and career. As her relationship with herself improved, it became clear to her which parts of her life needed to be let go of and which needed more attention. She began to include time for new friendships and dance. She sensed a wanting to return to the southwest and developed a learning plan for career growth. We both acknowledged her sense of grounded ness and her ability to allow space for what would come next. She came in recently and said she had just been offered (out-of-the-blue) a challenging new position in a company she new well. It would allow her to return to the southwest, be near family and friends and make a six-figure salary! We shared in the glow of that moment and I said good-bye to a very together 29-year-old woman.
Feedback from clients
“I was very fortunate in choosing Jeffrey as a counselor last year. I was at a very difficult juncture in my life, dealing with a complex and unpleasant situation at my job and the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease in a parent. I had a strong idea of how I believed I should feel and react to these complicated issues and I was very angry that I couldn’t seem a just “get hold of myself and fix things” right away. The harder I tried to force myself to hurry up and move forward, the unhappier and essentially paralyzed I became.
Through my work with Jeffrey, I was able to slow down and pay attention to my feelings, not the feelings I thought I was supposed to have. In time, I was able to make some long overdue, life changing choices. I am a much happier person today because of these choices. I will always have to remind myself to slow down, pay attention to what my body is telling me and live my own life regardless of what others tell me is best for me. Jeffrey got me started on the right track to leading a happier more fulfilling life and taught me how to access the voice inside me that I was ignoring. I will always be grateful.”
